SLASW WESTERN AREA & SOCIAL WORK SOCIETY, FOURAH BAY CELEBRATE SOCIAL WORK MONTH WITH AN IMPACTFUL SYMPOSIUM

The Sierra Leone Association of Social Workers (SLASW) Western Area, in collaboration with the Social Work Society at Fourah Bay College (FBC), successfully hosted a symposium at Tunde Cole Building, FBC, as part of the nationwide Social Work Month celebrations. This event brought together esteemed speakers, faculty members, and students of the Social Work Department to discuss the vital role of social work in fostering inclusion and intersectionality within society.

The symposium was officially opened by Dr. Abdul S. Kamara, Head of the Social Work Department at FBC,

who welcomed attendees and emphasized the significance of social work education in shaping students’ careers. The President of the Social Work Society, Ms. Alimatu Kargbo further reinforced the role of social workers in advocating for social justice and supporting vulnerable populations.

Delivering the keynote address on behalf of the Minister of Social Welfare, Deputy Minister Alhaji Mohamed Haji-Kella highlighted the need for social workers to move beyond representation towards meaningful participation in inclusion efforts. He stressed the importance of intersectionality in addressing diverse social issues and ensuring the full integration of marginalized groups into society.

The event featured insightful presentations from distinguished guest speakers representing various organizations and districts. A panel discussion provided students and faculty an opportunity to engage directly with the speakers, fostering a deeper understanding of real-world social work practices.

The symposium concluded with a certificate presentation ceremony, recognizing the contributions of guest speakers. The high level of engagement and positive feedback from participants underscored the success of the event, with recommendations for similar engagements in the future to further enhance students’ exposure to practical social work knowledge.

SLASW Western Area and the FBC Social Work Society remain committed to strengthening social work education and professional development, ensuring that future social workers are equipped to address the complexities of social inclusion and intersectionality in Sierra Leone.
