SLASW NORTHERN REGION SUCCESSFULLY CONCLUDES SOCIAL WORK MONTH 2025 CELEBRATIONS

The Sierra Leone Association of Social Workers (SLASW), in collaboration with the University of Makeni (UniMak) and Ernest Bai Koroma University of Science and Technology (EBKUST), successfully concluded a series of impactful events in the Northern Region to commemorate Social Work Month 2025. These activities aimed to raise awareness of the social work profession and its vital role in national development.

The celebrations commenced on 15th March 2025 with an engaging radio discussion on Radio Makneh. Social work students from both universities, moderated by the SLASW Regional Coordinator, discussed the significance of the profession, highlighting key aspects of the 2025 Social Work Regulatory Bill and sharing real-life experiences in practice.

On 16th March 2025, a friendly football match between the Social Work Societies of UniMak and EBKUST was held at the Wusum Mini Stadium. This event fostered camaraderie among students while promoting social work. UniMak secured victory with a 2-1 aggregate score, bringing excitement and enthusiasm to the celebration.

The grand finale on 17th March 2025 featured a citywide awareness march

, followed by a debate competition at EBKUST’s Hall. The debate topic, “In the fight to end child marriage, empowering girls through education is a more effective strategy than legal enforcement,” saw EBKUST students arguing in favor and UniMak students opposing. EBKUST emerged as the overall winner, with one of their students earning the title of Best Debater.

The event was attended by students, faculty, and key stakeholders who reaffirmed the importance of social work in addressing social inequalities and improving the lives of marginalized communities. In his remarks, SLASW’s Regional Coordinator- Northwest, Alfred Kelleh Kargbo, emphasized the association’s commitment to strengthening the profession through legal frameworks and international standards.

The Northern Region’s Social Work Month celebration ended on a high note, leaving a lasting impact on students and practitioners alike. SLASW remains committed to advancing the profession and looks forward to future engagements.
